Watford Mencap

Watford Mencap today supports over 500 children and adults in the Watford and South West Herts area who have learning disabilities, such as Down’s syndrome, autism and cerebral palsy. Some people need support with everyday practical or social skills; some need 24-hour care; some are able to lead fairly independent lives.

The money raised from the 10K will help to fund our Children’s Centre in St. Alban’s Road in Watford. The Centre has been described as a ’lifeline’ by the many families, as it is the only facility of its kind in the area that welcomes all children, no matter how severe their disabilities.

Over 100 children and young people aged 2 to 19 attend the Centre and have a range of disabilities. Sadly, many of these children are socially excluded from mainstream activities and discriminated against due to their disabilities and behaviour. A wide range of activities have been designed to help develop children’s social skills, gain confidence and enjoy positive experiences in a non-judgmental and fun environment.

Although the Charity is affiliated to National Mencap, it does not receive funding from them and runs as an independent local organisation. Thank you for supporting Watford Mencap through the Watford 10K 2007.
